The Development of Ottoman Studies in Hungary

This article examines the development of Ottoman studies in Hungary from the late 19th century to the recent period. One of its main findings is the ideological importance of the early modern period under the Ottoman rule for the formation of the national canon, as it became a central point of reference for both Labanc and Kuruc approaches, which constitute the main pillars of Hungarian national historiography. Tracing the main paradigms from national classicism to the impact of Marxist and Communist historiographies, and finally to the consequences of the recent period, it points out the similarities and differences within Hungarian national historiography and Hungarian Ottoman studies with respect to the Ottoman past both in central Hungary and Transylvania.
