The main purpose of this article is to develop a general survey on literature of city guides, written on Istanbul in variety of languages. In fact the term “city guide” -in Turkish sense- has not been very well defined and its boundary is not clear enough to make an academic classification. In this article I have tried to make a restricted definition of “city guide” including encyclopedias, books and selected writings of which primary concern is to present city in terms of both its physical and cultural features. Based on this definition I have held the major studies on Istanbul. The tourist guides, city maps, journals, travel accounts written before the midst of XIXth century are also not included in this article. However, for the sake of creating a good harmony among the studies at this article, I have sometimes deviated from this definition.
