Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, as one of the most debated figures of the past thirty years in terms of his works and ideas, is also a very prominent author of Turkish literature in the post-Republican era. Identified as a poet, story teller, novelist, writer of essays and a literary historian in contemporary times, Tanpınar differs from his counterparts in terms of his rich cultural accumulation, perspective and his aesthete identity. Well-known for his novels Huzur and Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü, his story “Abdullah Efendinin Rüyaları” and his poems “Bursa'da Zaman” in histories of literature, he is observed to have provided an intense analysis of the subjects of “past time,” “crisis of civilization” and “transcending the present time” in his works. This study scrutinizes his views on culture, civilization, history, artistic works, heritage of the past as well as his perception of poetry, stories and novels in an attempt to portray his diverse personality.
