The Line of Salafiyya and Ibn Teymiyye in the Islamic Sciences Literature in the Republican Era: Introductory Thoughts
The salafi discourse, which can be encountered in nearly any period of Islamic history, became a major part of the public discourse, especially after the political, military and cultural crises and the varying attempts at remedy in different regions of the Islamic world starting in the eighteenth century. Many figures and movements of the period utilized the discourse of the adherence to the salaf and used Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn Qayyim as references in their thoughts and claims. Reverberations of these developments had also been witnessed in Anatolia before the Republican period; however, during the one-party years, the links to other Islamic regions had been severed, hindering further developments. After the 1960s, there were some attempts to bridge this gap; translations were made from prominent contemporary supporters of the salafi rhetoric and in some regions, circles started to form around teachers, who had absorbed the salafi discourse as part of their claims. After the 1980s, there was a profuse translation of Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn Qayyim's texts and at the same time, there was a noticable increase in academic research on these two figures.
