Since the Second Constitutional Era, which was the last period before the end of the Ottoman Empire, about two-hundred translations of the Qur'an were produced, the quality of which did not correspond to their quantity. Taking scholarly precision and semantic correlation as criteria, one can even say that the translations by Elmalılı Muhammed Hamdi Yazır (d. 1942) and Hasan Basri Çantay (d. 1964) are still unsurpassed. Although there have been other good translations in the recent past, these were orientated towards the earlier ones, mainly those by Elmalılı and Çantay by copying them directly or being inspired by them.
