Although works such as Sharh al-Makasıd and Sharh al-Mawakıf were taught at the madrasas a time when philosophical theology (kalam) was most popular, kalam constitured the preferred field in which most new works were penned. This article dwells on the reasons for this choice and introduces three works of kalam taught in the Ottoman madrasas together with their authors: Sanusi's Umm al-Barahin, Ibn al-Humam's al-Musayara and Ibrahim Laqani's al-Jawhara al-Tawhid.
