On the Education of Non-Muslim Subjects in the Ottoman Empire

This article concentrates on the educational activities of non-Muslim Ottoman subjects in both the classical and modern periods. A critical evaluation of books and articles on this topic is offered by the author. In this period, a distinction between the classical and modern periods should be drawn. However, the internal and external educational activities of the non-Muslim Ottoman subjects should also be brought to light. Some requirements must be met for a satisfactory study. First is the necessity of the knowledge of the languages of the non-Muslim minorities in order to be able to make use of their original sources. Moreover, the approaches of modern scholars on the subject must be revised.
