Studies on Turkish History of Turkish Technology and Mechanics

The history of technology and mechanics are new subjects in Turkey. This article will present the publications on the history of technology and mechanics in Turkey for the period from 1923 to 2004 and it will also attempt to deduce some results. In these two fields first treatises had been made by scholars such as Mehmed Fatin Gökmen, Süheyl Ünver, Emin Kalmuk and Fikri Santur. The publications on the history of technology and mechanics have numbered totally 428; among them 80 are books and the remaining 348 are articles. Most of these publications are on communication technology and scientific personalities. The railway technologies have been the most studied topic in the communication technology. Among the technical scientists, the most popular person is al-Jazârî. In the history of technology and mechanics, Kâzım Çeçen and Atilla Bir at Istanbul Technical University have been the most prolific writers in Turkey in terms of publication. The Ottoman period has been the most studied area in this way. Nonetheless, it is obvious that there is neither a satisfactory book on the history of technology in general nor an adequate study on the Ottoman technology or history of technology in Turkey in particular.
